How Recent Changes Impact YOUR Homestead Exemption
In response to a 2023 Texas state law mandating the verification of homestead exemptions every five years, the Tarrant Appraisal District (TAD) has implemented a targeted approach to ensure compliance while minimizing inconvenience for homeowners. Rather than requiring all homeowners to reapply, TAD is focusing on accounts with potentially questionable statuses. Approximately 30,000 such cases have been identified for review, primarily due to discrepancies such as conflicting addresses or ownership records. Homeowners selected for verification will receive a letter from TAD requesting confirmation of their primary residence. It's crucial for recipients to respond promptly; failure to do so after two notices may result in the loss of the homestead exemption, leading to increased property taxes.

For those who do not receive a verification letter, no action is required, and their homestead exemption remains unchanged. However, it's advisable for all homeowners to periodically review their exemption status to ensure continued eligibility. The homestead exemption provides significant property tax relief by reducing the taxable value of a primary residence, and maintaining its accuracy is essential for both homeowners and the county.

Here’s how homeowners in Tarrant County can check the status of their homestead exemption:

1. Visit the Tarrant Appraisal District (TAD) Website. ( or your county's appraisal site)
Enter your property address or account number in the search bar.
Review Your Property Details ( click details in bottom right corner, then view more)
Look for a “Homestead Exemption” label to confirm if the exemption is currently applied to your property.

If you believe your exemption is missing, you’ll need to submit a new homestead exemption application.
The form can be downloaded from the TAD website or requested in person.
Submit the completed form along with a copy of your valid Texas driver’s license or state ID that matches your property’s address.

If you are unsure or need clarification, you can contact the Tarrant Appraisal District directly at (817) 284-0024.

If you receive a letter requesting verification of your homestead status, respond promptly to avoid losing your exemption. Failing to respond may lead to its removal, potentially increasing your property taxes.
